EXHIBITION TEXT / Julien Fournier’s flowers fall off the tongue like quickly quipped caricatures, or wisecracks for the readily (or headily) amused. One-liners latch onto latent behaviours and become games of Guess Who. These portraits play on strategies of self-differentiation that are formatted and fitted to standard sheets: not quite A4 yet not far from. In this, perception becomes less a question of 20/20 vision than twenty questions, asked in inverse, in an act of self-erasure. Autobiography, as Romantic scholars have suggested, is an act of de-facement: the ultimate existential joke.
Fournier’s new series, WHAT’S NEW, consists of vector images of flowers aligned with text-based portraits. His practice deals with questions of self-identification in an age of irony.
