AVALANCHE! Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present Debutantes and Scamps, an exhibition of new works by Megan Dyck.
/ EXHIBITION TEXT
Megan Dyck creates in-between objects which seek to arouse both delight and repulse. It is the humour implicit in this absurdist proposition which feeds her long-time preoccupation with characters of a beguiling, unpredictable nature who frequently belie their presumed role. As such, her most recent works indulge this fascination by examining the explicit role of decoration as it pertains to the activation of imaginary characters who possess a distinctly contradictory nature. These works come together as a village of sorts. They’re conserving energy like the morning before a state fair, unassumingly poised in a quiet parade of anticipatory stillness. They are apparatuses and accoutrements, playgrounds and pets, bus boys and uncomfortable furniture, words on the tip of the tongue, and tacit obligations like carnival prizes that can neither be touted as trophy or deemed as trash. They are potential tools for mere utility and caricatures of our most incongruous selves. They’re optimistic fledglings, well intentioned, loyal, flustered but poised — indeed, often downtrodden or underestimated — but most eager to make your acquaintance.

Dyck received her MFA from the University of Victoria (2014) and a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2010.
