AVALANCHE! Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present Weeping and Making Sad Noises, an exhibition of new works by Omar Lalani.

/ EXHIBITION TEXT

Living his whole life as an Artist in Calgary, Omar’s creative pursuit lead him to the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2009. Graduating four years later from the Visual Communications Program, where high attention to craft and process were enforced, he created a foundation for a career in the creative field. After graduating, dedicating his practice to painting felt all too natural, as his aesthetic and overall creative intentions were best suited for the intuitive nature of the medium.

Within the broad parameter of contemporary painting Omar’s work examines object vs image; aesthetic vs expression; and narration vs abstraction. The relationship between opposing elements resembles newtons cradle, emphasis alternating from one to the other. His painting process begins intuitively, images are built with shape and colour, allowing figures and narrative elements to emerge through their own volition. Juxtaposing formal elements to create a fine balance between illustration and abstract painting. This approach to painting defines the aesthetic of his work.
