AVALANCHE! Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present Left and Leaving, an exhibition of new works by Jason Deary.
/ ARTIST BIO
Jason Deary works from the assembled artifacts or recorded actions, moments and experiments found in an experimental self-generated archive. Invented, discovered, borrowed and mimicked painted languages come together to form new conversations about the medium’s burdened past and murky present. Familiar forms, tropes and structures from the gallery are referenced. Tongue-in-cheek nods to abstract expressionism, op-art, cubism and surrealism make appearances in attempts to relate to and unlock looming figures in painting. Deary completed his MFA at OCADU and BFA at University of Windsor. His interest in the languages of painting, collections, archives and history is informed by his professional work in galleries and museums. Deary has upcoming solo exhibitions in Calgary and Toronto in 2015. He lives and works in Toronto and is represented by MULHERIN, Toronto/New York.
The artist wishes to acknowledge the support of the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council in producing this exhibition.
