AVALANCHE! Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present SUDDEN DEATH, a solo exhibition of new works by Vancouver based artist Russell Leng. Russell received an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice from Edinburgh College of Art in 2013, and a BA from Trinity Western University in 2009. His work has been collected and exhibited at galleries worldwide including Beers.Lambert (London), FFDG (San Francisco), Hungryman Gallery (San Francisco and Chicago), Fleming Collection (London), Embassy Gallery (Edinburgh), Parts Gallery (Toronto), and Trench Contemporary Art (Vancouver).
SUDDEN DEATH employs parody, appropriation, and visual translation as a way to address themes of winning/losing, waiting, and the psychology of competition. In the video “Boxing” (2013), artist Russell Leng suspends the moment of decision in a boxing match, presenting both the victor and loser on either side of the referee. The looping video draws upon anticipation and waiting where both success and failure are presented.
In an unexpected and often humorous way, the exhibition asks the viewer to consider where they align in relation to success and failure, and uses sport as a way to examine the often overlooked themes of competition and disappointment evident in the art world and certainly everyday life.
Spanning abstract paintings (“Ping Pong”, “Waterskiing in Santa Marta”), sculpture and installation, Leng takes visual cues from the aesthetics of sports. Asserting this facet of culture as legitimate grounding for critical dialogue in contemporary art practice, the exhibition reveals that the sporting and art worlds are more connected than we thought, and when in dialogue with each other can make for valuable discussion on how we view ourselves between the polarities of success and failure.
