AVALANCHE! Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to present Ville Fantȏme, an exhibition of new works by Calgary-based artists Cassandra Paul and Slavek Pytraczyk.

Through both a literal and metaphorical consideration of a ghost town, Ville Fantȏme explores themes of abandonment & isolation, and the relationships one shares with the environments and people that surround them. Pytraczyk’s photo-based works depict commuters on crowded tramways in Kraków, Poland; a mundane and repetitive activity that often makes one feel isolated, despite being surrounded by others, while Paul’s sculpture of a pristine, untouched playground carousel considers literal abandonment, evoking a sense of nostalgia through a decaying monument of the youth of her own generation.

Cassandra Paul is an emerging artist living and working in Calgary, AB. She is currently the administrative director of AVALANCHE! Institute of Contemporary Art as well as the administrator for the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation. Paul has shown her solo and collaborative work both locally and nationally, most recently having a solo show in Stride’s Project Room. Through painting and sculpture Paul explores the manmade environment and the histories of people that lived, worked and played within them.

Slavek Pytraczyk is a multi disciplinary, mixed media based artist. He graduated from the Alberta College of Art & Design in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. Themes of personal isolation, private and public space, and scenes of ruin and decay are often found in his works.
