→ ONVIS, AVALANCHE! Edition No. 2 (available in the gallery shop)
AVALANCHE! is proud to present Vapor, the premier exhibition by ONVIS. The exhibition runs from August 3rd to August 29th, 2012. An opening reception will be held on August 3rd at 8:00 PM, with the artists in attendance.
ONVIS is the collaborative identity of Thomas Dahlgren and Stephen Nachtigall, two emerging artists that have come together to actuate their shared sensibilities and proclivities for art making. The ONVIS brand embodies health and fitness, strength and beauty, transcendence.
The duo has created a collection of new works that exemplifies the research-based process that is employed by the two artists. Art and life are brought in close context, as commodified entities enact strange relationships among the tailored surfaces and presences conveyed in the work. The exhibition invites the viewer to interact and engage with the relationships taking place between the relational objects and entities, in such a way as a mirror takes its reflection as its surface.
Excerpt from the exhibition essay by Sabrina Tarasoff:
Mystification. They come to us from above like divine apparitions and emerge in our midst as foreign entities. We sense their strangeness yet accept it as a part of their stellar significance, their qualities become equal to ours, their bodies a part of our planetary ecology. The cosmic abyss introduces strangers whom strike us with their pale luminosity, and allure us into their presence as though carried by lunar tides. An epithet: alien. Supraliminal emergence from the reaches of infernal space brings us to assume their fantastic form as inexplicably Enlightened; they are unknown substances, products of the intangible (of the mind). Like the lunar surface itself, they descend surrounded by cosmic haze, enveloped in an Aerial mist. As though happening by the light of the moon, we find ourselves surrounded by reflected light; unaware, we attempt to approach. The alien mist envelops us, the collective is lost in a diffused substance.
